superstar ingredient - ceramides

Ceramides are skincare ingredients that are often referred to but rarely explained. relativskin wants you to understand why we chose the ingredients we have, and exactly how they enhance your skin’s vitality and health. Here’s the word on ceramides.

relativskin currently uses ceramides in two products: Fortify peptide serum and Hydrate ceramide lotion. We use a ceramide complex system of vegetable-derived, semi-synthetic ceramides, cholesterol, free fatty acids and phytosphingosine. The complex contains Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, and Ceramide EOP.

What are ceramides?
Essentially, naturally occurring ceramides are lipids (fats) found in the uppermost layers of skin. They make up over 50 percent of your skin’s composition, so it’s no surprise they play a vital role in determining how your skin looks, feels, and responds to environmental impacts.

What do ceramides do?
Ceramides help hold skin together by forming a protective layer that limits moisture loss and protects against stressors. Additionally, ceramides are one of the skin-preserving “powerhouses” responsible for supporting skin’s dynamic nature. Phytosphingosine actually helps skin make more ceramides.

Why do I need them in my skin care?
Age and sun damage reduce the effectiveness of your skin’s natural ceramides—and can eventually deplete them, weakening your skin’s barrier and resulting in drier, rougher skin, dehydration lines, redness, and visible signs of dehydration. Ceramides make it possible to significantly restore that which has been diminished.

Well-formulated skincare products containing ceramides will help reinforce your skin’s barrier and increase hydration—giving you plumper, smoother, firmer-feeling skin with fewer visible lines and wrinkles and reduced sensitivity.

Ensure your products that contain ceramides are packaged in black, deep violet, or opaque bottles with pumps. Ceramide products packaged in jars or exposed to light and air will lose effectiveness quickly relative to those that are properly packaged.

Because they’re naturally a part of your skin, ceramides are ideal for all skin types—even the most sensitive, breakout-prone, or oily skin. They’re also safe to use around the eyes if the product is irritant-free.

Because no single ingredient can do everything, ceramides are most effective when combined with other skin-replenishing and skin-restoring ingredients.
