superstar ingredient - resveratrol

Resveratrol is a polyphenol: one of a unique group of plant-based compounds typically found in spices, dark fruits, dark chocolate, and red wine. Polyphenols are antioxidants.

Antioxidants play a significant role in fighting free radicals, which are unstable atoms that suffer from a lack of electrons, and therefore bond to other atoms to share their electrons. If free radicals overwhelm the body's ability to regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress ensues. Oxidative stress can break down the skin's collagen, resulting in fine lines, deep lines, uneven skin tone, and sagging skin.

Our bodies naturally produce free radicals, but they can also come from exposure to environmental factors like UV rays, pollution, cigarette smoke and other chemicals. Once an overload of free radicals is present in our system, it causes oxidative stress, or an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to counteract or detoxify their harmful effects.

There’s plenty of evidence that antioxidants prevent or lessen free radical damage, which is why polyphenols like Resveratrol are beneficial both in your skin care and on your plate. Applied topically, Resveratrol provides the following benefits:

  • Protects the skin. Resveratrol can interrupt negative environmental influences as well as protect the skin from UV damage.
  • Slows aging. Resveratrol works on a cellular level to fight the process of aging by stimulating healthy cell proliferation.
  • Reduces redness. Resveratrol contains key skin-calming properties that help minimize the look of redness and inflammation.
  • Evens skin surface and tone. Not only does Resveratrol brighten and even your skin tone, it also works to improve the overall texture of your skin.

It’s for all the above reasons that we have included resveratrol in our Nourish antioxidant serum at a generous concentration of 5% to ensure optimal efficacy.
