charity of choice: Downtown Eastside Women's Centre

Living on the west coast of Canada, home of one of Canada’s most challenged neighborhoods, we’re acutely aware that “there, but for the grace of God, go I”.

relativskin’s charity of choice is the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre. If you’re not familiar with Vancouver’s downtown eastside (DTES), it’s a neighborhood that consistently faces a high volume of complex issues: disproportionately high levels of addiction, homelessness, poverty, and mental health issues. Despite the challenges, residents have created a resilient, caring community.

We chose this particular charity because:

• Women make up 40% of the Downtown Eastside population, yet
• Only 4% of health resources are allotted to women’s organizations, and
• 69% of women say women’s only spaces and services are safest for them.
